OPAL pipeline construction braves weather and floods – no risk to schedule
Kassel/Elsterwerda. The heavy rain fall and the floods in southern Brandenburg and North Saxony have also hindered work on the OPAL natural gas pipeline. In the area round Elsterwerda the construction site had to be vacated, and pipe transports are currently not possible there either. The construction work was also stopped south of the state border in Saxony. Some sections of the construction zone in the region are almost completed submerged under water because of the continuous heavy rain.
However, Bernd Vogel, Managing Director of OPAL NEL TRANSPORT GmbH, says the planned commissioning date in October is not in danger since the construction work has made good progress so far. “Even the long winter and the difficult weather conditions at the beginning of the year couldn’t stop us. We are well on schedule.”
330 kilometers of the 470-kilometer-long pipeline have already been laid, and over 400 kilometers of pipes have been welded together. Even the land restoration has already begun.
