Exhibition on archeology from the pipeline track opens in Güstrow Castle

Archeological treasures from the OPAL and NEL excavations are on show to the public in Güstrow

On 19 August 2011, at 11 am, the exhibition “PIPELINE | ARCHAEOLOGY – Excavations on the major natural gas pipeline tracks in Mecklenburg Western-Pomerania” in the Güstrow Castle Museum will be officially opened by the Minister for Education, Science and Culture of the state of Mecklenburg Western-Pomerania, Henry Tesch. The collection of the State Office for the Preservation of Culture and Historic Monuments contains around 400 exhibits and gives visitors insight into the excavation works before and during the construction work on OPAL (Ostsee-Pipeline-Anbindungs-Leitung – Baltic Sea Pipeline Link) and the North European Natural Gas Pipeline (NEL) with the help of information panels and photographs. The exhibition will run until December 2011.

The laying of the natural gas pipeline, more than 330 kilometers in Mecklenburg Western-Pomerania alone, is also an opportunity for the state archeologists to gather new information on the historic development of the regions. Hence, experts from the State Office for the Preservation of Culture and Historic Monuments have been working there since 2008 examining the archeological discovery sites along the pipeline tracks, documenting their findings and recovering the finds. Analyzing them will occupy researchers into the state’s history and archeology for many years to come. Some of the countless archeological treasures were already on display in some touring exhibitions, and now the highlights of the excavations in Mecklenburg Western-Pomerania  will be presented to the public in Güstrow. They provide a fascinating insight into the results of the ongoing excavations. Thousand-year-old artifacts give a glimpse of what life was like that long ago.

The exhibition “PIPELINE | ARCHAEOLOGY – Excavations on the major natural gas pipeline tracks in Mecklenburg Western-Pomerania” is being realized by the State Office for the Preservation of Culture and Historic Monuments with the support of WINGAS and OPAL NEL TRANSPORT GmbH Kassel in cooperation with the Güstrow Castle Museum.
