Planned compressor site
Purpose and planning status of the compressor station in Baruth.
The OPAL is around 470 kilometers long – why are there plans to build a compressor station in an industrial area south of Berlin?
The site for the OPAL compressor station has to meet several requirements: The pressure necessary for transporting the gas to the South has to be built up at about the half way point of the OPAL. In addition, a link to the existing transport network has to be built. Here the OPAL will be linked to the JAGAL natural gas pipeline, amongst others, which runs parallel to it. All these requirements are met in Baruth.
What is the purpose of compressor stations?
Compressor stations are an important element of a gas pipeline system. Gas loses pressure when transported over thousands of kilometers so the pressure has to be raised again and again by compressors in order to ensure a smooth onward transport. It makes sense to locate the compressor in this region from the point of view of regional planning, technical and environmental considerations.
